Josiah Swanson, with a time of 16:44, held off Brian Russell (timed at 16:55), to win the warm Mayo Open 5K cross country race held following the High School Invitational Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017. By race time the temperature was starting to drop but still was in the 80 degree range.
This was the first time since 2010 that 2 runners went under 17 minutes. 3rd was Clare Brandt in 17:47, being first women finisher ahead of Cherie Johnson at 19:55, who was the women's winner last year. Clare became the first woman to finish the race under 18 minutes (old record was 18:22 by Donna Mueller in 1985, first year the race was run).
Among master's runners, Dan Feda was first for men in 18:33 and Deb Thomford was first among women at 25:35. The 35 finishers was up from last year when stormy weather almost canceled the event (22) but still under the usual 40-60 range.
Deb Thomford set a new age group record for 60-69 women (old mark 26:40 by Yvonne Hubmayr in 2013) and Jerry Wille ran the 2nd fastest ever time for a male age 60-69 (John Brown ran 20:38 in 2003). Youngest finisher, Jamison Ping, set a new mark for age 10 and under in 20:16, almost 2 minutes faster than Chad Couser ran (22:11) in 2008.
