Weather almost stopped the 30th running of the Mayo Open 5K cross country race at Eastwood Golf Course (a storm canceled last year's event), but all competitors crossed the finish line before the rain came.
Due to the impending storm, the number of participants was less than half the usual number, but those competing still enjoyed the challenges (hills) the course provides. For the first time, the winner went over 19 minutes, as Chris Riley was clocked at 19:08, being first men's master's finisher as well. He was followed closely by first female, Cherie Johnson, in 19:10. Dan Gibbons was 3rd in 19:17.
Ellie Crum was second woman to cross the line, while Sonja Kranz finished first among women's masters runners. Though no age group records were set, 75-year-old Sandra Dahlquist posted the 2nd fastest time for 70 and over women, while Cherie Johnson had the 3rd fastest for 20-29 year old woman, Cherie's time also being the 3rd fastest ever for women.
