Aid Station and Course Marshall instructions

Water Station Volunteers

Please be at your water station by (time), (day), (date). We will make a final sweep of the course at (time - usually 20 min before start) to ensure all is in place.

Water station captain: Please have a cellphone available and email your cellphone number to the race director at (XXXXX@charter.net). The RD's cellphone number is (XXX-XXXX)

Begin filling cups immediately

• You should have cups, containers of water, a table, trash containers (plastic bags)

• Ensure all is set up prior to the race start (time of race start)

• Although the race starts at (start time), the 2 mile aid station should not be providing water to the runners on their first pass (which is about 1/3 mile into the race on the first round) this is an instruction for a course that loops around Silver Lake)

• Place the table on the edge of the grass blvd. such that you can grab the cups off the table and hand them to the runners

• Immediately begin filling as many cups with water before the race starts. The entire table should be filled with cups of water

• Take the top of the container and dip the cup into the water. Do not use the spigot - it is way too slow and you must work fast!!! Wear rubber gloves when dipping cups into the water or electrolyte drink container.

• Fill the cups about ¾ full

• Suggest having 2 people handing out water with one person replacing the cups and water on the table (the numbers will depend on the size of your race)

• Two people (the numbers will depend on the size of your race) handing out water should position themselves between the table and the street to easily grab the water off the table to hand off to the runner

• The person filing the cups on the table should position himself behind the table adjacent to the sidewalk, out of the way of the other 2 people (the number will depend on the size of your race)

• Place the cups in the palm of your hand and expect the runners to grab them out of your hand

• If things get especially hectic (with several runners coming through simultaneously), grab the lips of the cups (2 cups per hand) and hand them to the runner in this fashion

• Expect to get wet

• Please pick up all the cups off the streets prior to ending your shift

• Place the aid station supplies in a neat orderly fashion in the same area as the aid station. Please be sure all is picked up and out of the way of traffic.

PLEASE absolutely NO SMOKING during the race.

Runners appreciate any encouragement you might give.

Remember you represent the (whatever your run is raising money for; i.e. the Ronald McDonald House) and everything it means to our community and throughout the United States. Please be courteous and assist wherever you can to ensure every runner has the best experience possible. For many this is their first ever race, for others, it is an opportunity to contribute to a great cause. All have been training for this race and are doing the best they are capable of. Honor them!!!

Course Marshalls Instructions

Please be in your positions by (time - usually 30 minutes before the start) (day) (date). We will make a final sweep of the course at (time - usually 25 minutes before race start) to ensure all is in place. Please have a cellphone available and email your cellphone number to the race director at (XXXXX@charter.net). The RD's cellphone number is (XXX-XXXX).

You might want to take a lawn chair and a book until race starts (time of race start)

Your responsibilities:

• Ensure all runners stay on the correct course; point them in the correct direction

• Ensure the safety of all runners

• Ensure no runner cuts the course

• Note any specific instructions for specific locations along your course, i.e. the following bullet points for a race around Silver Lake:

• If your position is on East Silver Lake Road (14th St. NE and Silver Lake Drive or 7th St. NE and Silver Lake Drive), at 7:45 AM, please place the barriers across the road entering onto Silver Lake Drive to prevent any vehicle from accessing Silver Lake Drive. Please remove those barriers at approximately 8:45 AM

• If your position is in front of the Fire Station, the fire trucks have absolute priority if they are called out. Please stop the runners to permit the trucks to exit (this has never happened to date (knock on wood)

• If your position is on West Silver Lake Drive and the intersection onto the bike path (near Broadway McDonald's), please direct the runners up onto the bike trail

• If your position is in front of a driveway into a parking lot (West Silver Lake near the Fire Station, East Silver Lake near the picnic shelter, the parking lot near the church on East Silver Lake Drive), please ensure that no car turns into the parking lot in front of a runner (East Silver Lake should be closed to vehicles and should not present a problem, but........)
