Douglas Trail Run now named after the late Reggie Oeltjen
The Rochester Track Club, during its June meeting, decided to rename a long-running race after Reggie Oeltjen, an avid runner and dedicated RTC member.
The annual RTC race on the Douglas Trail will now be called the Reggie Oeltjen Douglas Trail 11-Mile Run. In 2017, the 42nd annual race, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 5. The race is a grand prix race of the track club.
The decision by the RTC board was unanimous after a request was made by race directors Gwen Jacobson and Sonja Kranz.
"We want to honor Reggie's love for running by having this long-running race named after him," the race directors told the board. "Reggie Oeltjen has been an integral part of the Douglas Trail 11-mile race for many years. Not only has he helped us set up the course since we took over the race, he did it for several years prior to us assuming this race...and he always ran it."
Oeltjen died in May during his Border to Border Run at 65, a quest to run across Minnesota from the South Dakota border to the Wisconsin border after he turned 65.
