Weather Cancels 40th Annual Women's Race for the First Time Ever
Thank you to the vigilant volunteers!
The race was delayed for a few minutes due to the storm, but a 2nd storm rolled in faster than expected,25 minutes later. All the Field Marshals and Finish Line volunteers were caught by the storm, as well as all but 13 runners who were fast enough to beat the torrential downpour!
What a wake up morning we had for the 40th annual women's 4-mile race. Looked like we would be able to squeeze in our event between two storms, but Mother Nature had other ideas.
The best intentions are sometimes interrupted by events beyond our control. With optimism on our minds, we started the Women's 4 Mile Race with excitement and plenty of chatter. About 25 minutes into the race that once slow moving storm decided to gather steam and blew into Rochester with a vengeance bringing thunder, lightning, heavy rain and solid winds.
Although a few of the faster runners were able to finish the 4-mile race, there were still many women out on the course fighting the wicked elements trying to find the finish line. A quick and very appropriate decision to cancel the race and round up those runners still on the course was made in the best interest of all the participants. As disappointing as it is to not finish a race, to continue would have jeopardized those women still out on the course.
It was amazing how the volunteers and those who had finished the race rallied with their vehicles and picked up runners still out on the course, bringing them to the safety of the Silver Lake East Shelter. A grateful thank you to those involved in that recuse attempt for immediately rising to the occasion. One of the many reasons we love to be part of the running community, we take care of one another.
Despite the need to cancel our race, we all congregated in the shelter and had a great time with one another conversing, enjoying post-race refreshments, and handing out door prizes (they would have been our awards). Thank you to all those who braved the elements and who were so very understanding of our need to cancel the event.
We are guaranteed better weather for our 41st annual Women's Run on the 3rd Saturday in July, just cannot imagine it being any worse!!
